When I tell people I'm a hypnotherapist the most common response is "what sort of thing do you do - stop people smoking? The answer to this is both yes and no, in reality I help people who want to stop smoking stop but I don't make them, they do that themselves.
As an ex smoker who stopped by using hypnotherapy I know first hand how well it works. It's been over 18 years since my last cigarette and I have no desire to smoke again.
How To Quit Smoking
So how does it work? Well we all know how bad for us smoking is, all the awful things it does to our bodies, our finances, possibly even our relationships, but knowing this often isn't enough. If it were that straightforward then having been made aware of the dangers, seen the pictures on the packets etc everyonewho wanted to would stop.
The reason they don't is because there's something else going on. How many times have you tried to stop, whether with will power, gum, patches or any other aid, but it hasn't worked, or maybe it did for a few weeks, or months? Then inexplicably you start again.
What's happening is your unconscious is interfering, trying to help you but actually making things worse. This is where Cognitive Hypnotherapy comes in.
Our unconscious acts as a protective device, always looking out for us, keeping us away from danger, but because human beings have been around for a long time and have evolved more slowly than the world around us has sometimes the unconscious gets it wrong, sees danger where there is none, or moves us towards something we should be moving away from.
In the case of smoking the unconscious sees a benefit, so no matter how hard we try to stop the unconscious pulls us back into smoking. With my help you can discover the unconscious reason for your smoking. I can take you back to the time you made the decision to smoke (which very often is not when you thought it was) and you can reverse that decision.
Once the reason to smoke is gone the habit is easily broken. Usually this takes one two hour session with the option of a one hour follow up session a week or two later if needed. In the 13 years I have been practising only a handful of people have needed to come back.
